How can scientific research help uncover connections between substances, cases and criminal networks?
Lightly is a Brno-based deep tech company developing new tools for rapid substance analysis and forensic intelligence. Built on technology originating from research at Mendel University in Brno, the company is working to bring advanced analytical methods out of the laboratory and into real-world use. Lightly is also a consortium partner in the InnovPrecMed project, contributing its entrepreneurial and deep tech perspective to the project’s innovation activities.
At the centre of Lightly’s technology is Catcher, a portable device designed for fast substance analysis directly in the field. Using Lightly’s patented UV-Fingerprint technology, Catcher can generate a unique chemical fingerprint of a sample within minutes. These fingerprints can then be compared and connected, helping reveal links between individual samples and supporting a broader understanding of where substances may come from.
This means Lightly’s ambition goes beyond simple detection. By combining rapid field analysis with forensic intelligence, the company aims to help law-enforcement and other relevant actors identify patterns, connect cases and respond more effectively to emerging threats.
Lightly is also a strong example of how university research can develop into a technology with real-world and international potential. From research and technology development to commercialisation and cooperation with external partners, its journey illustrates many of the challenges – and opportunities – involved in bringing deep tech innovation to market.
